On 18 August 1998, the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, was privileged to acquire an extremely important item for its cultural and heritage collection. The official portrait of Brigadier Paul Buckley, AM, RAAMC, was unveiled in Canberra. It joins the series of portraits of the Director Generals and Surgeon Generals which form such and important part of the history our nation. The commissioned artist was Mr David Thomas, of Sydney, and all would agree that this outstanding portrait takes its place as one of particular artistic and historical significance. The RAAMC is extremely grateful for Mr Thomas' dedication to the project and has a great respect for his extraordinary talent. - J.H. Pearn, Major General, Surgeon General Australian Defence Force
Having my portrait painted by Dave Thomas was a most enjoyable experience. He quickly put me at ease and talked about what I hoped the portrait would convey - the discussions that ensued were relaxed, professional and positive. I was delighted with the portrait as were those who commissioned it. A good relationship was established with Dave and that relationship has grown beyond the portrait. - Riley Warren AM
In May 1991, the Historical Memorials Committee, Parliament House, commissioned Mr David Thomas to paint a portrait of the Honourable Leo McLeay, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives. Mr Thomas was most professional and managed to work within the stringent brief provided without question. The resulting portrait was outstanding and was incredibly faithful to the vision discussed. The portrait proudly resides in the halls of Parliament House as part of the official collection. - Michael Jones, Manager, Parliament House Art Collection
